How to Calculate Board Feet
A board foot is a unit of volume equal to 144 cubic inches — equivalent to a piece of wood 1 inch thick, 12 inches wide, and 12 inches long. Lumber yards price hardwood by the board foot, making this calculation essential for project planning and budgeting.
The formula is straightforward: multiply thickness (inches) by width (inches) by length (inches), then divide by 144. For length in feet, the formula simplifies to: (thickness × width × length in feet) ÷ 12.
When buying rough-sawn hardwood, thickness is often expressed in quarters: 4/4 is 1 inch, 5/4 is 1.25 inches, 6/4 is 1.5 inches, and 8/4 is 2 inches. These are rough thicknesses before planing.
